Fungal Nail Splits: Causes, Treatment & Prevention

Question
I ask you this question because there was a question about nails directed to you.
I have a fingernail that splits right at the free edge. Years ago this nail cracked below the quick and I had a nail tech recommend a overlay. She put a gel on it. After it grew out, that is when the nail started to split. It is very annoying and I can not let it get long, due to it getting caoght on fabrics. I can not even have any free edge. HELP!!! Thanks, Ellen

Answer
Hi Ellen and thanks for writing,

I have the same problem with my left great toenail and it is very inconvenient. My toe was accidentally caught in a car door being closed.'

I spoke to a doctor about it and was told my only option was to have a Podiatrist remove the nail surgically but then it would most likely grow back thicker and curl like a parrot claw so I have never pursued it.

I would advise you go to a Foot Clinic and see if thee are other options I am not aware of, but be sure to ask about potential risks and outcomes so you are well informed before you agree to any treatment.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best,

Margot
