Understanding Chiropractic Screenings: What to Expect & When to Seek Care

Question
Hello Dr.  I went to a "Free Screening" on the side of the road today from a chiropractor.  I was not feeling bad or anything but it was free and my husband wanted to stop.
He did this thing that was suppose to tell us how our nerves where working in our neck area.  He put somethings on our neck that read something into a computer.
When the print out showed up he said mine was showing too much "stress" it wasn't good and I should make an appt.
I asked him, what could be causing that, was it serious, those sorts of questions.  He said he really could not tell me.  I would have to be seen etc.  I continued, wondering if this was something serious or just a ploy to get me in his office so I asked him, "well is this life threatning?"  He said it would not be professional to tell me that.
I am curious on your take on chiropractors.
By they way, I am a healthy 25 year old woman.  I do have some sinus and allergy problems as well as TMJ, all of which the man blamed on whatever he was seeing in that reading.  Yet he could not tell me what problems I could face from leaving the problem alone or how he would treat me.
Thanks for your time.

Answer
Generally from my experience some Chiropractors do contribute in people with musculoskeletal problems but little else. I doubt if the road-side analysis is anything other than an effort to "scare up" business which it has certainly done in your case. Pretty much everyone except the mentally retarded people I care for are showing too much stress so that is just a guess. Sinus and allergy are also very universal so those would be guesses also.
In Chiropractic, the free first visit is a typical ploy to get people in to set them up for lifetime treatments. The really ethical competent professionals do not scare up business.
But you should ask you own doctor what they feel is correct in your specific case. OK?
