QuestionHi Robert Borucki, before I ask the question, Ill give an overview first.
-started July 18th
-started with: a throat tickle/dryness & became a sore throat. Fatigue like you have when you have a cold/flu.
-turned to: sore throat diminished over time, but then developed a cough & this weird feeling in my chest
-was coughing up cloudy & greenish/yellow sputum in the mornings
-there were NO: fever, chills or runny nose
-history of childhood asthma
-First doctor visit: he said he didnt want to give antibiotics right away
-Second doctor visit: he said allergies & asthma (given ventolin & advair)
-based on auscultation of chest/back & examination of throat (both visits)
-now has been 15 days, but I have had a decrease in mucous (just a bit in the mornings, not colored, just cloudy).
-I can tell I still have the illness (still some fatigue, just not feeling up to doing anything, weird/warm type feeling in chest (this has decreased as well). Hardly any cough, but still sometimes I have the urge to do so.
-Im supposed to go back for a follow up appointment, any ideas/suggestions, any tests do you think I should ask for? Thanks.
Answerthe book says these are viral and the treatment you listed is appropriate... meaning antibiotics don't help, but if there is any sinus pressure/pain/congestion, I tend to acquiese and give antibiotics and use some afrin nasal spray twice a day for 5 days.
but with the hx of childhood asthma, people are slow to improve sometimes... the asthma isn't gone, just mild enough to not cause symptoms most of the time. The advair should help... sometimes I just use some oral prednisone since it is cheaper and short term.
Good luck with it.
