Persistent Coughing in Adults: Causes & Solutions

Question
QUESTION: When people get older do they tend to grow longer hairs in their throat causing them to cough more often? I find at age 31 I can't clear nearly enough flem to feel the job is done. I always have that tickle in my throat like there is still excessive dust being held in place. I've already been cleared to possible strep and had my throat x-rayed. No doctor has found anything in particular wrong with my throat. If it is likely a matter of excess throat hair is there a way to dissolve some of it so I can use less of my time coughing?

ANSWER: that won't help.... most likely you have a persistent irritant.... either you are refluxing a little acid at night and irritating that tissue or you have allergies to something.... mold, pollen, cigarette smoke, etc that is irritating the tissue.... no way to modify the "hairs/cilia" to help with symptoms.....

QUESTION: Thanks. Now I had another question. Do most medical doctors have high IQs? I've seen research that suggested they are among the smartest people of any profession including rocket scientists. Since intelligence is often hereditary that would suggest that most new doctors are the next generation of previous ones, and few new people make that cut?

Answer
I don't know stats, but obviously to make the cut, doctors have to be good students and motivated.... so they have to be higher up on the list.... but off the record, I have met some dumb doctors, but most are very intelligent.   However, many fields select out for higher intelligence.... the rocket scientists you mentioned, engineers, lawyers (some at least) etc....  I think a lot of next generation doctors are motivated not only by their genetic high IQ but what they grew up seeing.... their mom or dad in a service industry that yields some nice pats on the back as they help people and become attracted to it.....

I was the first generation doctor in my family.... all the men were engineers... I just consider myself a human engineer sometimes.

I will bet there are good stats out there on avg IQ for docs, etc.   Good luck with your research.....
