Carotid Artery Issues: Symptoms, Causes & What to Do

Question
Hi, I am not elderly, I'm only 55, however, I am concerned that I may have a problem with my carotids. Several months ago I noticed a bulging or swollen area at the base of my throat right where the carotids branch out. This was after a particularly tough workout at the gym. Anyway, now three months later I have noticed bulging in the same area on the opposite side of my neck, same location. I am concerned. I have hypertension that is NOT well-controlled, being on 4 different meds. I am only about 40 pounds overweight, and I've lost 20 pounds over the last year. Yet, my blood pressure continues to be high. I eat well, mostly veggies and no red meat, only fish/chicken, yet my triglycerides are high. My cholesterol levels are WNL. I do not have a family hx of hypertension, but strong FH of heart disease; my father had 3 MIs. I would like your opinion on my swollen areas which are identical on both sides of my neck; could this be a carotid problem? Should I be concerned? My dr appt is in 1-1/2 weeks, should I move it up? If you haven't already guessed, I'm a nurse; that's why I "speak the language". I am very worried, please try to advise me.

Answer
Hi Patricia,

I'm really glad you've already made an appt to see your physician as we obviously don't want to mess around with HBP or new 'bulges', especially around or near the neck.  Like you, I'm a RN but not a doctor, so this is just my personal opinion and for a professional opinion you need to rely on a qualified physician.

So let's start with the bright side. (1) you have no other symptoms like headache, n/v, dizziness or blurred vision, and (2) I think the fact the bulges are bilateral is a good sign as I would doubt any type of carotid aneurysms would develop on both sides at the same time.

On the other side, as we all know, HBP is 'the silent killer' due to its lack of obvious S+S and you already have issues controlling your BP.  I am a bit concerned that the bulging appeared after working out so it would be wise to avoid anything strenuous until you're assessed by your physician.

Congrats on the weight loss! I too struggle with keeping my weight where it should be and appreciate how difficult it is to lose and keep weight off in a healthy way. I hope my words have helped in some small way and I do wish you well.

All the best,
Margot
