QuestionMy adult daughter is at the 5th of 6th Lupron injections. During the course of treatment she has had a severe flare of her bipolar symptoms, worse than she has ever had in 8 years. Is there some correlation with the decrease of testosterone and estrogen with the other hormonal imbalances associated with bipolar disorder and mood stabilizers? At this point she is dysfunctional, unable to work etc. There has been some speculation by her Psychs. that may be the cause. How long does it take for the Lupron to become inactive in the system after the last injection?
AnswerDear Lafonda
Good questions...I did a little reading on line regarding your concerns. There is in fact, a correlation between Lupron and bi polar disorder and/or depression. The articles state that anyone with this diagnosis should be closely watched by their doctors.
Like any hormonal treatment, these meds affect all levels in your body, seritonin is one of them. I am on meds that balance my seritonin levels and in turn, do affect my estrogen levels.
I would call your daughter doctor again with your concerns, because they are valid concerns.
And I am not sure how long Lupron stays in your body, but I would suspect a few months...
Best of luck to you and if you don't get clear answers from your doctor, I would find an endo specialist.
