Endometriosis & Pregnancy: Navigating Fertility Challenges

Question
My wife Karina and I have been battling Endo for 2 years, she has a severe case.  She had a laparotomy 8 months ago and her pain returned in the last 12 weeks.  Her Doctor confirmed that she in fact had Endo again, and we were getting ready to schedule her for another operation this month.  Obviously disappointed, we started looking at alternatives for having children thinking it wasn't in the cards.  However, she missed her last perdiod and this week we confirmed that she is 4-5 weeks pregnant.  We are obviously thrilled but a little confused.  Her pain still exists and now we cannot help but worry about the implications, risks etc.

Can you let me know what the risks are, and the likelihood of her being able to carry the pregnancy....even with the pain and Endo?

Thank you,
Douglas

Answer
Hello Douglas,

CONGRATS!!! Sorry but I had to say that. This is very wonderful news.

It is rare that women with Endo have miscarriages but it does happen. It is most likely that your wife will have a great pregancy and the both of you will be blessed with a healty, bouncing baby. Just be keep a careful watch on the pregnancy.

Usually, if able to get pregnant, pain will subside during pregnancy. So your wife will have that to look forward to along with morning sickness. Months and maybe even a year later she could be pretty much pain free because pregnancy "keeps the Endo at bay", so to speak.

Now, onto something else that concerned me in your email. You stated that your wife's doctor said that the Endo had returned. So many people fall into the trap of "laser surgery or a lap cures Endo". This is NOT true. Your wife may have had a brief stint of not having pain, but rest assured, Endo was still there. It is all but impposiible to get rid of all Endo. There are a few doctors in the states who now use Exscion surgery who are having amazing results and in time it may be a cure, but as of right now, there is no cure for Endo. Laser surgery can help by getting "the worst out" but it's still there.

Anyhow, once again, it is wonderful news to hear that you and your wife are expecting. Be on the careful side but do not worry too much. Getting pregnant is the hard part.

Any other questions, please feel free to contact me again.

Sincerely,

Angie
