Understanding Amniotic Fluid Levels & Pregnancy Progress

Question
the Dr. did do a ultrasound to find out my fluid level she said it was 6.45. is that low? i go back on Tuesday for another ultrasound to see if the level went up. what happens if it doesn't go up? also can you have sex if you lost your mucous plug and are 1cm dilated and 50%? if i have sex will it put me into labor? thank you for your help

Answer
6.45 is on the low end of normal, but it is still normal.  Your doctor should not be recommending early delivery or any other drastic interventions based on that number alone.  When you go back for your follow-up ultrasound, go ahead and follow the rehydration instructions I gave you:  drink 10-12 glasses of water every day from Saturday on.  If you can make that number higher, maybe your doctor will leave you alone.  But even at 6.45, you and your baby should be fine in the absence of any other problems.

You can have sex anytime until your water actually breaks.  Having sex can encourage labor, because semen contains prostaglandins, which help soften and ripen the cervix in preparation for dilation and delivery.  However, sex by itself will not put you into labor.
