Postpartum Bleeding After Childbirth: What to Expect

Question
I gave birth at the beginning of june and my lochia lasted just over a week, Ive now started bleeding again I presume this is my first period. It is very heavy and I am passing lots of small clots.  Is this normal for a first period? I thought I would've passed all the tissue during my lochia.  Is this anything I should get checked out from my doctor? Thank you

Answer
If your lochia only lasted a week, it is possible that you did not fully shed all the lining that built up during your pregnancy.  Now that you are having your period so soon, it is normal to experience some slightly heavier bleeding and even a few clots.  You should contact your doctor if you experience extremely heavy bleeding (usually defined as soaking through a heavy pad or tampon in one hour), if you pass any clots larger than a dime, or if you experience any symptoms of excessive blood loss, including pale skin, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, and increased heart rate.
