Persistent Postpartum Bleeding: Causes & Solutions
QuestionMy baby is nearly 6months old and im still having a constant heavy bleed. The docs have given me different tablets to stop it but as soon as i come off them i start bleeding again. What could it be?Thanx
AnswerThe most likely suspect with extended postpartum bleeding is a fragment of retained placenta. Even a very small fragment can prevent complete healing of the uterine lining. Sometimes a D&C is needed to ensure all of the placental fragments have been completed removed.
Another possibility is hormonal birth control. Although most women taking progesterone experience a complete absence of bleeding, some women react exactly the opposite, having nearly constant bleeding as long as the extra progesterone is in their system. If you are taking the mini-pill, or if you have had a Mirena IUD placed, you may want to try discontinuing these to see if the bleeding stops.
