Postpartum Period & Bleeding: What to Expect After Childbirth

Question
Hi, my name is Lisa and I am 2 1/2 months postpartum.  After 36 hours of intense labor I had to have an emergency c-section.  Everything went well and mom and baby are both healthy.  I had my first period 28 days after she was born and it lasted over 2 weeks.  At that time I was still trying to breastfeed but I had to stop due to complications.  I started my period 2 days ago and I am experiencing extreme bleeding and cramping.  Just trying to find out if this is normal after giving birth or if I need to see a Dr.
Thank you!

Lisa

Answer
If you're soaking more than a pad an hour, you should seek medical attention immediately. If the cramping is more extreme than you've experienced previously, I recommend you make an appointment to see your medical caregiver as soon as you're able.  Generally, your first few periods after childbirth will have heavier flow. However, extreme bleeding is always a sign of concern.

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)
