Menstrual Irregularities After Laparoscopy: Causes & What to Expect

Question
Hi. My husband and I have been ttc for over a year. I had a laparoscopy done on June 14th to aspirate a small cyst on my right ovary. My menstrual cycle has always been very normal (every 26 days). Today is cycle day 33 and still no period. I have been having minor cramps for a week now as if menstruation is about to happen. I took a home pregnancy test on cycle day 30 and it was negative. My obgyn gave me the green light to try this month (a couple of days post-lap) so I am wondering if the laparoscopy could be delaying my period or if possible that I am pregnant and just tested too early? If it can cause a delay, how long does it usually take? Please help and advise on what I should do.

Answer
Dear Anna,

I would suspect that the removal of the cyst would disrupt your cycle before I would suspect the lap itself. The removal of the cyst may have caused a bit of trauma to the area near the ovary and may affect this first cycle.

If you have a history of regular 26 day cycles and tested on the 30th day, it wouldn't necessarily have been too early. If you begin to have signs of early pregnancy (swollen, tender breasts, nausea, headaches, backaches, etc,..) you can wait 5-7 days and test again just to be sure. Otherwise, I would suggest that you simply wait this cycle out. Keep trying to conceive in the meantime.  :-)

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
