Understanding Mammograms and Ultrasounds for Breast Health

Question
I just had diag. mammo done due to left breast pain and lump.  Mammo picked up lump, did magnified mammo.  Radiologist said "half the time its a lymph node".  Did ultra.  Nothing was said about lump which showed on ultra...just commented on "cyst" which was found in another area.  Radiologist said to just follow up in 30 days.  I went to a very small hospital in our area.  It was a digital mammo.  I have the disk which shows the mammo pics and ultrasound pics.  I've been on antibiotics for 5 days now and still have breast pain, still feel lump.  I still don't know what the lump is, there was nothing further stated.  I'm 35 with three small girls and a very strong family history of breast and ovarian cancer.  Any info you have would be great, I'm starting to go nuts!!  Vicki

Answer
2 things should be done to secure the diagnosis - especially since you have a family history. 1. A breast MRI scan! And 2. a needle biopsy of your lump to know for sure what it is! If a needle biopsy for some reason is not available a surgical biopsy should be done!
