BRCA1/2 Gene Inheritance: Understanding Risk and Dominant Expression

Question
Can the BRCA1/2 mutated gene be inherited, if so can it be recessive??

Answer
All genes can or may be inherited. In these 2 cases. BRCA 1 & BRCA 2 the risk of inheriting any of them is 50% if a parent has any of them.. Both must be considered dominant but is nevertheless not always expressed (= resulting in cancer). Of those with any of these genes around 10-15% do NOT get cancer at any time during their life times. We now mean breast cancer and in women. Also men with these genes can get breast cancer - especially with BRCA 2 - but men has a much lower risk than women of developing breast cancer also with these genes. In women they may cause breast & ovarian cancer. In men breast cancer and with BRCA 2 also prostate cancer.
