Unexpected Period While on Birth Control: Causes & What to Do

Question
Hi, I have been on the pill (Levelin) for over a year and I have been having one period every three months. Its been working fine. Last month I got my period while on the sugar pills like normal. Five days after it ended I got my period again. At first I thought it was spotting but its a full on period. I have had it for 12 days now. I've never had a period that long. I have continued to take my pill but it hasn't stopped the period. I have had cramping as well. I'm 18. I haven't missed pills, I'm not that stressed and I'm have not been sexually active (within the last four months). Do you know what's going on?

Answer
Dear Carrie

Hopefully, your period ended and you are back to normal? I hope you talked to your doctor about this problem.

I can't say what it might be if you haven't been sexually active and are not stressed. Birth control pills have hormones in them which could cause delay or abnormal periods. So did your doctor say that having your period just every 3 months was normal. I'm concerned about that.

I would recommend consulting your doctor. Also, you might consider going off the pills if you are not sexually active at this time. This could make your body go back to normal and have a normal monthly period. Let me know your thoughts.

You may email me at CHERYL51@aol.com so hope to hear from you soon.
