Prolonged Period After Starting Birth Control: Causes & What to Do

Question
I'm 24 and I started taking birth control pills about 3 weeks ago. I took  the first pill on the first day of my period, just like my doctor told me to do. The regular period was a pretty much normal, but no fresh bloor really, just brown discharge. But two days later another period started, and I'm still on it. It's been almost two weeks now, and it doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon. It's really starting to bother me now. This period is heavy, and I get really bad cramps at night. I already scheduled an appointment with my doctor for next week, but I just wanted to know your opinion on it. Is this normal? Is it something I should be worried about? I've been on birth control pills before, about a year and a half ago, but never had that happen to me. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi A.
Thanks for your question. I'm not a medical professional so I am glad that you are going to your doctor. Sometimes, though, they are not well-informed about the pill and side effects, etc. I don't believe birth control should be as widely prescribed. Anyway, yes, the bleeding sounds abnormal and concerns me. Is it possible you could do abstinence or some other methods besides pills. If you email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com we can more about other methods if you like. Hope this helps and let me know what happens at the doctor.
