QuestionI started Seasonique 6 weeks ago, and aprox. 3 weeks ago had unprotected sex. Normally I would not be concerned, but I was taking an antibiotic. I was told that antibiotics can alter the effects of birth control, is that true? and is there a way I can find out if I am pregnant besides waiting until my scheduled period?
AnswerSince you had been on the pill for 3 weeks, you were protected. Antibiotics, other than Rifampin, don't significantly alter the effects of birth control, in spite of rumors to the contrary. If you wanted to be sure, you could stop the pill for 4-7 days and then re-start. As long as your period comes, you're not pregnant. Although the Seasonique is designed to take for 3 months, you can bring on a period sooner if you like, as long as you've been taking the pill at least for 21 days, and don't stop the active pills for more than 7 days. Follow this and you're always protected.
