Mirena Implantation Complications: Understanding Upside-Down IUD & Correction
QuestionI been having stabbing pains in my lower left abdominal area. I went to the er where they did an xray that showed my mirena being upside down and sort of crooked. They said to go to my regular doc to have it fixed. Until i can get into the office, im freaking out because I'm not sure how serious this really is. I'm still in pain. What typically is the method for correcting this problem? Ive read about surgery sometimes being needed, but is this typical? Also, was that right for the hospital to send me home with this iud still upside down and in pain? Thank you.
AnswerHopefully the problem can be corrected by removing the Mirena. If the string is present at the cervix, that will make it easier. If not, it will probably require reaching through the cervix to get hold of the string or the IUD to remove it. It's possible that the Mirena has worked its way into the wall of the uterus, or even perforated through the uterus into the abdominal cavity. It will probably be necessary to do an ultrasound to know this, since an x-ray often can't tell. Whether it was right for the hospital to send you home probably depends on how much pain you were in, plus the facilities they had. Ideally it would have been nice to get an ultrasound and have you seen by an OB/GYN doctor, but in some places, that's not possible.
