QuestionHi. I am pro-choice (pro-abortion in some cases .... )
I am trying to research on the modern day LEGAL abortion procedures.
I have run across more horror stories however, including a procedure in which the fetus is chopped up and removed from the womb, piece by piece.
Or another, where the cranium is cut open and the brain is sucked out with a hose.
I don't think this is factual information and is more like scare tactics to terrify the average ignorant person into thinking that people are actually murdering babies.
My mother had an abortion because she became pregnant when she was a teenager. She said that they numbed her and used a vacuum like machine to suck out a tiny clump of tissue that did not resemble anything remotely human-like, and that was that.
So how are abortions really performed, specifically at certain points in the pregnancy?
I have heard of a pill called, I think RU463? Not sure if that's the correct name of it.
Anyway, I figure you have done much more research than I have and know what is real and what is a lie.
Thank you
AnswerHi Desirai :)
Your mother's report of what happened is typical of first trimester (89% of) abortion procedures. At this early point in pregnancy, a vacuum aspiration machine is inserted through the vagina, then the cervix (which when dilated causes the pain) and then most of the pregnancy tissue is sucked out, with a little remaining that the uterus will continue to get rid of in the next few days.
Also, up to about 9 weeks, women can have a medical/chemical abortion that routinely uses two sets of pills-one that is RU-486, or mifepristone, that stops the pregnancy from continuing. Another drug, methotrexate, may be used instead for the same purpose. The next medication used is misoprostol, cause the uterus to start contractions, which then rid the uterus of the pregnancy.
The second trimester procedure (13-24 weeks) is a dilation and evacuation. The first step is to insert a cervix dilator into the woman's cervix. A day later the woman returns, has the dilators removed, and the pregnancy tissue removed (via aspiration, curettage and other instruments)
There is also an intact dilation and extraction (21 weeks+), what anti-choice people call "partial birth abortion" and lie about the way it's done.On the first day, laminaria is inserted to dilate the cervix. Two days later the procedure continues with forceps being sued to remove the fetus by its legs and upper body through the vagina. Because her body is not in labor or ready to birth, the head of the fetus is too big, and an incision is made at the base of the skull, and then the matter inside is suctioned out, allowing the skull to collapse and fit through the vagina.
