Understanding a Missed Abortion: Symptoms, Causes, and Options

Question
I am about 7 weeks pregnant. I have had 3 ultrasounds. The first one was after having some bleeding. The Dr. found a subchorionic hematoma which she described as big and I was measuring at 5 weeks with no sign of fetal pole. I went back a week later and the Dr. found a fetal pole but no heartbeat. I went back today (a week later) and there was no growth in the fetal pole and still no heartbeat. She told me the pregnancy is not viable and that I will miscarry naturally or she can do a d and c. I still feel pregnant and don't want to be hasty in my decision. With the information I've been given do you agree fully with the diagnosis of missed abortion?

Answer
Dear Cecelia

I agree with your doctor in the diagnosis of missed abortion. As for the symptoms of pregnancy you experience, this is quite normal and may last up to 4 weeks after losing the pregnancy and before evacuation. Once a d & c is performed, these symptoms will regress.

I wish u a better luck next pregnancy.
