QuestionHi. I am 10 weeks and am scheduled for a surgical abortion later this week. My concerns are
1. My doctor called me today to say that I have bleeding between my placenta and uterus. I am not currently vaginally bleeding but was for 2 weeks after a vaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks.
2. I was using protection (spermacide) when I got pregnant this time. I was pregnant and had a surgical abortion approx six to seven months ago, and was using condoms at that time. I am worried that having 2 abortions so close together could be too risky health wise.
PLEASE HELP!
AnswerWith regards to the bleeding, your doctor will be able to help you better than I can. Since I am not a full medical professional, I don't have much knowledge about bleeding during pregnancy and what it means. I'm an expert only on matters of abortion, the different methods of abortion, and their effects on your body and reproductive system.
The answer to your second question is NO, having two abortions close together (or three, or four, or five) does not affect your future fertility, as long as the abortions are early (less than 12 weeks pregnanct), safe (carried out by a doctor) and uncomplicated (no infections, no uterine perforations, etc). The chances of complications are very low indeed if a doctor is performing your abortion. In fact, early, safe and uncomplicated abortions have a LOWER chance of affecting your future ability to have healthy, full term children than childbirth!
One more thing you need to know: spermicides are NOT enough protection used on their own. They have about a 40% failure rate, which is very high. Condoms fail about 3% of the time. The pill only fails about 0.1% of the time when used correctly.
So I'd recommend you use condoms AND spermicide at the same time to reduce your chances of getting pegnant. Condoms by themselves are also OK, but as you know, they can fail sometimes, and the spermicide can help reduce the chances further. Or you can switch to hormonal birth control like the pill, the Patch or Nuvaring.
Come back here if you have any more questions. Take care!
