Persistent Bleeding After Abortion: Causes & When to Worry

Question
QUESTION: I had an abortion done on Nov 4 and 2 weeks and 2 days after i am still bleeding. The test shows that i am no longer pregnant, my uterus is closed with the help of some tablets not nor prescribed by my doctor.3 days after my abortion i had mild sex where the penis was not fully inserted, is this the cause of my bleeding? I am worried about this bleeding it is sometimes heavy and my doc says its not normal but it will stop. What if it doesn't? what must i do?

ANSWER: Hi Tanique,

If your doctor has examined you and says that the bleeding is ok then this is normal. It should stop by itself, if it doesn't your doctor will give you medication to stop the bleeding.

QUESTION: i was given medication to stop the bleeding but it only slows it down and then when the medication is finished my bleeding starts again.  The Doc says its not the usual to be bleeding so long. I don't want to bleed to death, I am happy i'm no longer pregnant but the bleeding worries me.  The tablets i take are NOVARTIS and NORCOLUT. At times I have clotting in the bleeding, I sometimes feel pain in my abdomen andmy stomach is bloated.I just want the bleeding to stop. What must I do? I wonder if my doctor is hidig something from me? Is there something i should know? How long (estimated/approximated) will it take for my reproductive organs to go back to normal?

Answer
Hi Tanique,

You don't need to worry too much unless you have been bleeding for more than 3 weeks. I think your doctor should give you another ultrasound to check for any left over tissue inside your uterus. If your uterus is clear then your hormones are the cause of this bleeding. Rest as much as possible and don't have sex, this should help the bleeding to stop.
