Post-Aspiration Abortion Recovery: What to Expect After 5 Days
QuestionDear Dr:
I had an aspiration abortion at 6 weeks on June 21st. The doctor said the procedure went fairly well, considering I had little fetal development (she kept saying I wasn't a text book case). The external ultrasound didn't detect pregnancy but a vaginal ultrasound indicated I was 6 weeks. After the procedure I had a vasovagal seizure. I fainted and my blood pressure dropped signifagantly. Four hours after the procedure I spotted blood, but not until then. I also through up twice after the procedure, I think it may have been the local anesethia?? Now, I'm 5 days post procedure and hadn't seen any blood until this morning. Today I am experiencing symptoms of having my period. Cramps, light bleeding- red blood. I'm a tough girl but I'm feeling a little emotional and moody. My check up isn't scheduled until July 13th, I haven't had any sex and don't plan on it until after I go back in. I am wondering if this all sounds normal. I just haven't had anyone to talk to about this and I'm not finding any similar stories to my own on these blogs. Please let me know what you think.
AnswerDear Annie,
Everything you describe sounds fairly normal. It is common to have irregular bleeding, stopping and starting, after any abortion procedure, including a nonsurgical method like the aspiration procedure. It sounds like there is nothing to be concerned about, and you are fine to wait to see the doctor at your follow up visit.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
