QuestionHi,
It is a bit long but I am suffering from lots of mental stress because of lots of nonavailability near to me. I hope, I will get a quick reply from you.
I am 22 years old and because of my menstrual irregularities I have been taking ovral G (Ethinylestradiol & Norgestrel Tablets I.P.) since September'08. My period is almost coming to be regular. I had the last irregular period on 1st September and started taking Ovral G as prescribed from September itself (I forgot the exact date from when did I start). Then I had the period on 10th October and then 8th November. I am completing the 3rd and final pack of Ovral G on 3rd December and my period should come around 6th to 10th December (as I am expecting). But I have had sex with my boy friend on 20th November (i.e on the 13th day from 8th Nov and if I was ovulating on that day!). I have used vaginal contraceptives and pull-out. But I am worried if all these fail because, I saw some red spotting on 25th November as I would have little bleeding on 24th Nov (could it be implantation bleeding?) without any pain. After that I am not experiencing any bleeding of that kind.
There are still some days left for my period to be arrived. I want to know the probable cause and consequences of my bleeding on 24th. Is it because of dryness by Ovral G or do I get pregnant? We are monogamous and hence there is no chance of STD as we feel. We had similar unprotected sex six months before. But that time I was in safe period. Moreover I have just come to know that the major compositions of Ovral G - Ethinylestradiol & Norgestrel, are used in almost all modern formulations of combined oral contraceptive pills. Does it mean that it worked effectively as emergency contraceptive and hence the bleeding on 24th?
Please say some words of relief to me prior that I may miss my period.
If I miss my period I want to terminate my pregnancy anyhow but not by surgical abortion. It is said that chemical abortions are effective within 49 days of LMP. So with this calculation I will be completing 49th day on 26th Dec. In between these 10-26 Dec I need to undergo chemical abortion. Is it safe without doing pregnancy test?
AnswerHi, Ruma,
No need to apologize for the long message. It was helpful.
First of all, please know that I am not a doctor, and I'm not intimately familiar with these various medications. Nor could I comment on them anyway because I'd be practicing medicine without a license. But I can, and will, make some general comments.
I don't know the story behind your menstrual irregularities, but I suffered from this for many years, so I know where you are coming from.
First of all, all those hormones aren't good for your body. It's asking for trouble. If there is some other way of dealing with your problem, it would be much better. Sometimes the consequences from this don't show up for years. You might want to investigate herbal remedies for menstrual irregularity.
Vaginal contraceptives and pull-out don't work. You might get away with vaginal contraceptives if you use them only a few times, but most people don't use them just a few times. The other thing that is just as unreliable is condoms. Pull-out doesn't work at all. In fact, if you get liquid near the opening, you can get pregnant from that.
You haven't told me what the 8th of November was in your cycle, that I can find. Normally, fertility occurs 14 days before the onset of the FOLLOWING menstrual period. When you are using contraceptives, however, you can't use fertility awareness; it won't work.
I can't really reassure you about what is going on with your body. Nobody can diagnose a specific issue like that over the internet, not even a doctor. Your best bet is to go to a doctor with this type of question. He can examine you, take a medical history, test your hormones, and other things like that.
I don't recommend the chemical abortion. You are obviously informed, to know that it has to be done before the 49th day; however, the closer you get to that date, the less effective it is. But chemical abortions are not safe. Here are some of the dangers. You can bleed excessively for a long time afterwards, even to the point of it becoming life-threatening. And there is really nothing that I know of that will stop it. I get a lot of questions from women who are experiencing this. Also, the second medication is being used off label. The manufacturer says NOT to use it during pregnancy. It can cause contractions of the uterus so severe that it can rupture the uterus, and there is NO WAY to control the strength of the contractions. If the uterus ruptures, you could easily hemorrhage to death very quickly. When they do a medical abortion, they send you home, and if you develop a complication, you are on your own. Another thing that can happen is that if you use the second medication vaginally, you can develop toxic shock syndrome and be dead within hours. There isn't even time for an emergency room doctor to diagnose the problem before you're gone. I got some more information about the dangers just the other day, but I haven't integrated it yet, and I couldn't find the message. The simple answer to your question is that chemical abortion isn't safe, even WITH a pregnancy test. The only reason it seems safe is because it hasn't been in use long enough for us to know the full extent of the harm it causes. But I don't know how many women have to be killed before they wise up. Obviously, they haven't fully wised up about surgical abortions, either, though word is starting to get out.
If you are pregnant, please let me know why you feel you need an abortion. I may be able to help meet some of your needs. Also, there are other and safer answers. Please, stay safe!
