Understanding Abortion & Future Fertility: A Personal Story & Concerns

Question
Hello, I had an abortion using Mifeprex in November 2008 and then again several weeks ago (February, 2009).  Our birth control failed in both occasions, leading to the unplanned pregnancies.  My fiance and I have had a horrible time dealing with these situations emotionally, but we both felt that given our shaky financial situation and our two children we already have, we made the wisest decisions.  We do want to have children together in the future, and we are concerned that the two medication abortions in such a short period of time could have affected my fertility.  Seeing that you are an expert on the drug and were involved in the research trials surrounding the drug, I thought that I would address this question to you, regarding how the repeated use of the drug (on two occasions in a short period) could have affected my fertility.  Can you provide any insight into this situation?

Thank you in advance,
Sadie

Answer
Dear Sadie,
There is absolutely no risk for future pregnancies with a medical abortion.  The abortion pill is a nonsurgical early abortion method, so there is no scarring of the uterus.  Basically, it induces your uterus to do what it naturally does every month - "release" or shed the period or menstrual lining.  The medications used in the abortion pill are in and out of your system within days, and you are back to normal by your next cycle.  You could have repeated medical abortions and no issues for getting pregnant.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
