QuestionQUESTION: i found that i was 5 weeks pregnant. i took the misoprostol and after the last dose bleeding started and continued for 5 days but it was light. after one week i did a scanning which showed retained conception products. i tried the misoprostol again but this time i had no cramps and no pain only spotting or light bleeding. how can the retained conception products be expelled without surgery? should i wait for the body to spontanuosly expel it? i need your advise as i'm confused.
ANSWER: R.O.,
Given that you are from Oman, I would guess that you don't have quite the options a woman might have in a different part of the world. So I don't know what resources you have available to you. I am unable to find any agencies in Oman that can help. I wish I could be of more help there.
When you say you were 5 weeks pregnant, did you mean from the time of conception, or from your last menstrual period? If from conception, there's a good chance misoprostol wouldn't work anyway. What it could mean is that you still have a healthy baby. You will need to find out. For starters, take a pregnancy test.
Misoprostol is not intended for use by pregnant women. This is because it can kill a woman within hours. It is supposed to be used for stomach ulcers. You didn't say where you got the misoprostol, but it is possible that you were instructed incorrectly on how much to take, how to use it, and so forth. Usually, it is the second medication given after another medication, so taking it by itself might not do any good anyway.
If you no longer have a living baby, you may need to have surgery. If you have to go to another country to get decent medical care, that might be best. But regardless, go to a doctor who doesn't believe in causing that kind of harm to a woman. Abortion is dangerous, no matter how it is done.
I urge you to find a doctor you can trust. Please take care of yourself, and let me know how this turns out. Feel free to ask more questions, though I'm not sure how much help I can be. But I'll try.

QUESTION: Thank you for your response. I was 5 weeks pregnant from my last LMP.My last scan showed that the baby is no more alive and there are retained conception products. The misoprostol is prescribed to me by a doctor from a country where abortion is allowed. i had 4 tabs(800mg) by mouth and one tab(200mg) i inserted in the vagina, after two hours i had 3tabs(600mg) and after two hours another two tabs(400mg). i took this dose after i emailed you and now i'm bleeding a little bit more than my normal periods and i noticed some clots in the pad and also when i pass urine. it is now for 4 days. should i wait until the bleeding is over and go for another scan? does this mean that the abortion is happening? when can i get my periods next?
AnswerR.O.,
You're welcome.
You really need to see a doctor. Let him advise you when to have another scan. He probably won't be able to tell you when you will return to normal cycles, either. This isn't the usual way of doing this type of abortion, by the way. Please stop taking chances with your body! Inserting these tablets into your vagina can cause toxic shock syndrome, and that can kill you in hours. Not only that, but these pills can cause contractions so severe that they can rupture your uterus. There is no way to control this. And this is also very dangerous. Even though you dislike the idea of surgery, it may actually be safer than putting these things into your vagina! And ultimately, it may be the only thing that will completely take care of the remains.
But the doctor can check your hormones, and he'll know far more than anybody talking to you over the internet will know. There is simply no way a person can tell you about your body over the internet.
I hope things return to normal for you. But the way you have been taking pills, I really can't tell you what the consequences will be. Neither could a doctor talking to you over the internet. So please go see a doctor, one you can trust. Don't go to the person who gave you the pills or prescribed them. Since what he did was unethical, and contrary to the manufacturer's instructions, he can't be trusted.
