Post-Abortion Period Delay: Causes, Symptoms & When to Seek Medical Advice

Question
I had a medical abortion on 13th march, after which i got my periods on 15th april09.My next period was due on 6th May. Before the abortion, my periods were regular (every 24- 26 days). It has already been 41 days and my periods have not yet started.I do not have any symptoms of pregnancy. I have however, been having some discharge for the last few days and not sure if that means something. Please note that In the week of 4th May 09, I had unprotected sex twice and missed using contraception( i.e week 8 after abortion). I have also taken 4 urine tests and they show negative. My doctor has put me on Deviry - 10 mg tablets to induce my periods. She has asked me to wait for another 10 days and if still there is no sign of my periods, said she would do a scan. However, I am really worried and confused. Could i be pregnant? and can i have a second abortion after waiting for another 10 days..

Answer
Hi, deepa,

Hmmm. You are going to make me use mathematics! Just kidding.

I appreciate this detailed message.

Normally, ovulation occurs 14 days before the next period starts. So if your period was due to start on May 6th, then assuming that you were fertile 14 days before, you would have been fertile around April 12. You didn't say whether or not you were calculating your period should start on May 6 as either a 24 or 26 day period. However, looking at it from another angle, if you had sex two days before your period was due, that would be way outside the time frame when you would have ovulated. It would be 2 to 4 days rather than 14. That said, the fact you had an abortion complicates things, because abortion causes a rather violent disruption of a woman's delicate hormonal balance. When you had your period on April 15, it's possible that it wasn't a true period, and it's also possible that your cycle has been readjusted to be longer than it was before. Now let's assume that you now have a longer period, more like 28 days. I think that still puts you outside the fertile period, which will tend to extend two to three days on either side of ovulation.

Since you have had your hormones disrupted, no telling what will happen. I got a question from a woman today who said she hadn't had a period for 8 months after her abortion.

You haven't described the discharge. Was it white or clear? Was it slippery? Did it stretch like a raw egg white? Was it thick or clumpy? Did you notice any odor? If you tell me more about this discharge, I may be able to tell you more about it.

I hope you will rethink the chances you are taking with your body. Don't think that if you simply have protected sex, you will be OK. Condoms don't work. I recommend that you find other ways to express affection. Please know that any penetration into any opening of your body can cause a nasty disease, especially if your partner has ever had sex with anyone else. Also, abortion is dangerous and could kill you. Don't think about having a second abortion. You were "lucky" the first time; don't take the risk again. The medications being used for medical abortions are also very powerful. The second medication normally given can kill a woman in hours, in several different ways. The manufacturer says it is NOT to be given to a pregnant woman. It is an ulcer medication! Any doctor who would give it to a pregnant woman is committing malpractice!

Let me know how you do. You are seeing a doctor (hopefully not the one who gave you the medication!) and she should be able to tell you more, but it will take time, and you just have to be patient. Please stay safe!
