Post-Abortion Period & Passing a Mass: What to Do

Question
QUESTION: I took the abortion pill 8 weeks ago and i have never completely stopped
bleeding. For the past few weeks i have had spotting that is mostly brown and
some times red. I still have not had a period either. Yesterday afternoon i
started cramping VERY badly and thought I was going to finally have my first
period since taking the pill. I went to the bathroom and felt a large mass
come out of me. I took it out of the toilet to see what it could possibly be and
found a golf ball size chunk of tissue. There was very little blood and i am not
bleeding now. What is this mass of tissue that I passed? It looks almost like a
piece of muscle with a few pea sized black knots on it. I examined it further
and on one side it has more of a stringy pink/grey muscle type look and on
the other side it has the black knots and more of a curdled white/grey tissue.
It is solid like meat and the shape is strange like a tear drop or something. I
just can not figure it out. Is it part of the tissue i passed when i took the pill
that has just been stuck in there and if so wouldn't I have gotten sick by now?
Is it some kind of tumor? I did save it in the freezer if I end up needing to go
to the doctor.

ANSWER: Hi, melissa,

Thank you for the excellent description. It sounds like you went through labor. That's what happens with the abortion pill.

What you passed could have been your baby. If this is what it was, you might not see any body parts or anything, because the baby would be in the amniotic sac and things might have changed enough so that you wouldn't recognize what you are seeing. Or it could have been a piece of placenta. Saving it and showing it to a doctor sounds like a good idea. It can be examined and dissected to see what is there.

Watch for bleeding at this point, and watch also for any signs of infection. This can include discharge, fever, and lack of strength or energy.

The abortion pill is dangerous and can kill you. Please don't think of ever using it again. Usually, a woman is given two courses of medication. The second one is given against the express instructions of the manufacturer because it is never to be used by a pregnant woman. It can cause contractions so severe that they can rupture a woman's uterus. There is no way to control the strength of the contractions. Or it can cause toxic shock syndrome, which can kill a woman within hours. In my opinion, any doctor who gives this drug to a pregnant woman has committed malpractice. It's not worth taking that kind of risk. Surgical abortion is also very dangerous. Telling you about all the problems would take a book. Please take care of yourself and don't take these kinds of chances!

Let me know what the doctor has to say.

QUESTION: I guess i should have read your profile before i asked this of you. I thought
the people on here were doctors. I already feel bad enough and i just wanted
to know what was going on with my body at this point. If you read my
question again and put aside you feelings on abortion you will see that I took
the pill 8 WEEKS AGO and had already had passed the baby and bled and
cramped and went through horrible pain that has pretty much been gone
until last night. Thank you for you time, I am sorry to have wasted it.

Answer
Hi, Melissa,

A lot of people jump to the conclusion I am a doctor. Don't beat yourself for not having read my profile. But please reread what you said. You never told me that you had horrible pain at the time. You said you had it recently.

It's possible you were carrying twins. And I also mentioned the possibility that it could have been a piece of placenta. And I can't rule out the possibility of a tumor. Medical abortions are huge doses of powerful hormones. But they haven't been in use long enough for us to know just what all the long term consequences might be. It IS known that some of these hormones DO cause cancer or other conditions. And you could have had a molar pregnancy.

Everyone has feelings about abortion. Some people are very much in favor of it, and some people very much against it. It's not a topic people can be truly neutral about. Seriously. You know why it bothers me? Because it hurts women! I have worked for years with women who have had abortions and have problems afterwards.

A lot of women seem to be OK for awhile. We don't really know what goes on with them deep in their heart, however. And eventually, most women can't deal with it anymore. A few may remain satisfied with their decision for the rest of their lives, but that's not many.

There are so many medical and emotional consequences to abortion that it would take a book to describe them all.

Your question was NOT a waste of time. You say you already feel bad enough. If there is any way I can help with this, I am willing to do so. I do care about you. Please take care of yourself. You are precious and you deserve better.
