Post-Abortion Tissue Passage: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
Hi Dr.
I am 26 and just had a suction abortion 4 days ago. I started to have slight bleeding 2 days ago, slighter than normal periods, but today I was astonished to see a palm size piece of tissue on my sanitary napkin. Clots are sticked to one side of it. And another small ball-shaped tissue, about the 2~3cm times 3~4cm. I dont feel much pain. But quite scared of the tissue... Is everything alright?

Thank you doc.

Answer
Dear Harmeke,
It sounds like you passed some of the lining that forms around the uterus, getting ready for the pregnancy.  It is called "decidua" and is not the pregnancy itself.  If it has passed, and you have not had severe cramping or significant bleeding since then, there is no reason to be concerned.  If you do keep passing clots and having cramping, you will need to have a check up at the facility where you had the procedure.
I'm sorry I was so delayed in answering your question.  I was unexpectedly without internet service over the weekend.
I hope this is helpful and not too late!
Doctor Joan
