QuestionI recently had an abortion on 5/7/10 for medical purposes and really want to have a baby desperately. I was told that we could try as soon as I felt emotionally ready. Well I counted the day of my procedure as the first day of my period and my husband and I have been intimate from 5/17-5/21. What are the chances that we could have conceived? We want this baby more than anything.
AnswerHello, Nikki,
You haven't said why you had an abortion for medical purposes, and that could be important. There are a number of medical conditions that some doctors will do abortions on when it's not necessary, and if it so happens that the doctor took the easy way out, you will want to find another doctor. There are a few medical situations where the doctor must act, but there aren't many.
You probably didn't conceive from the activity you have had in the past few days. It takes time for a woman's hormones to return to the pre-pregnant state, so counting the day of the abortion as the beginning of your period won't work. Once your body returns to the pre-pregnant state, then you will have to be fertile. You can learn to recognize the signs of fertility. You cannot be using any hormones. There are organizations in the United States that teach fertility awareness. Do a search on natural family planning. When you understand your own fertility, you will be able to tell when you have a chance of conceiving, and can make the attempt.
Good luck! Let me know how you do.
