Post-Surgical Abortion Recovery: What to Expect & When to Seek Medical Advice

Question
Hello,

I just had a surgical abortion yesterday. I was 6-7 1/2 weeks pregnant. I was given an ultrasound, blood works as well as a urine sample. Had twilight light anesthesia and the procedure went well. Recovery for me was great and I was up and out of the facility within 1 hour after the procedure. I was only given Cytotec 200mcg. I am not bleeding heavy at all, I have a very, very light flow like when you first get your period. I did pass what looked like a grayish, purplish red stringy stuff when I used the bathroom yesterday, but no clots. Not sure what that string was. I did not take the Cytotec yesterday because I was not bleeding heavy. Should I have taken it? I am not getting much cramping, very, very little. Is this all a  good thing? I was given no antibiotics because I am allergic to tetracycline, sulfa, codeine and penicillin. I called the clinic to find out why no antibiotics were given to me and I was told that the Dr did not want to chance any antibiotics because of my medication allergies. Should I have been given some kind of antibiotic? Should I have taken the cytotec? No fever yesterday at all, but will monitor it more today. No Tylenol as I have no pain, but have it handy in case. I woke up today, Sunday 7/17 an I'm still tired and the bleeding seems to ok so far. Should I experience heavy bleeding I will take the cytotec. Should I call the clinic to get an antibiotic and one that I will be able to take? Should I call my obgyn and ask her what is best? I'm at a loss and I need help. Please help me as I don't know what to do anymore!

Thanks

Answer
Hi dear Raven,
The clinic should have instructed you better.
Bleeding after an abortion is almost never on the first two days.
It starts at day 3 or 4, and could be quite heavy, though not dangerous.
If you feel you are losing too much you should take the cytotec.
But as you missed some periods, so you have plenty of blood.
Only a very small percentage of the women attracts an infection.
Remember that ones you had an allergic reaction to something
this could have been an allergic reaction to the combination of different
things. E.g a new soap or detergent or strawberries + tetracycline.
So to  the tetracycline  itself you are not allergic.
One of my patients had a whole list of antibiotics she was allergic to.
But she showed me this list when she had her shot of penicilin already.
I was very upset about it, but nothing happend.

So i think if you get fever higher than 38.5 C  get some doxicycline.
When you have an allergic reaction, you will not die from that.
But better buy some antiallergic drug as well to have it ready in case...

I think there is no reason to worry.
Bests,
DrShan
