QuestionI went to a clinic last Saturday to have a surgical abortion I was 6 1/2 weeks pregnant. At first the abortionist was setting up he had already put the speculum in place and applied the local anesthetic. He then however had a problem opening my cervix he said it was too tight. He then removed the speculum and said he would be unable to preform the abortion because he didn't want to put me at risk. However when they sent me back to wait in the lobby I was bleeding a lot. I asked to. Speak with him again and told hom about the bleeding. He then decided he should continue woth the abortion he gave me another sonogram and said I was still pregnant so they told me to prepare again for the surgey. This time it was very painful and it seemed as though he had to rip through my cervix. He also stated it seemed like the reason why was due to scar tissue. I was attempting to keep still but it was very difficult because the pain was so intense. He suctioned for about 2 to 3 minutes and then said he was done. Afterwards they gave me a shot and I vomitted. The monitored my vitals and said I was fine also I was just barely spotting so after 30 min I was released. I took the antibiotics on schedule until the they were finished and I only needed one pain pill during those first 3 days. On Thursday I began bleeding heavily bright red blood and had bad but not severe cramping. On Friday, yesterday, I noticed some blood clots also with bad cramping throughout the day. This morning I noticed several large flesh chunks and am still experiencing cramping. What do you think is the problem? Or is this normal?
AnswerHello, Elizabeth,
It sounds like you had a very rough time, and I'm sorry about that. To answer your question, having an abortion isn't normal. So anything that happens afterward isn't normal either. Is what happened to you common? Probably not, although it happens plenty. I'll explain what I see here.
First, the abortionist told you that your cervix had scar tissue. What that says to me is that either you have had an abortion before, or you have a sexually transmitted disease, or both. The fact he had to use such force to dilate your cervix means that there is probably serious damage by now. This will make it difficult for you to carry a baby to term in the future. You will need to tell the doctor at the time you start receiving prenatal care. The consequences of a damaged cervix include miscarriage and very early birth. Very early birth can cause damage to the baby, especially his brain, eyes, and ears. So the doctor will probably have to fasten your cervix shut to prevent this from happening. This is undone at the time of birth. The fact that you have this kind of scar tissue also may mean that you will have a prolonged labor, which could make a Caesarian section necessary. You will need care as a high risk patient. Now I'm just telling you what I see in this. But right now, you need to go to a decent doctor and have him examine you very carefully.
Bright red blood is fresh blood. It could be due to injury to your cervix, or injury to your uterus. The fact that you saw tissue may mean the abortion is incomplete, or that the abortionist cut some of your own tissue, which is now passing. Either way, you need immediate medical attention. To safeguard against hemorrhage in the meantime, what I would do is try to get some cayenne (an herb) from the health food store, and take it several times a day. But you need to find a decent doctor. Don't go back to the butcher who did this to you. You can find a doctor by going to an organization that works with pregnant women. There are organizations all over the United States. To find one near you, go to this web site:

The doctor should examine you thoroughly for injury.
Please take care of yourself, and don't take those kinds of chances in the future. Let me know how you do.
