Irregular Bleeding After Abortion: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
QUESTION: I had a surgical abortion in February 2012 and bled for 3 days few days after the procedure. I saw my period six weeks later and also saw another period 5 weeks after the first.  After the second period in May, I have not seen my period till 14/08 when i later saw some stains of blood. I was thinking I was pregnant again because I was having high temperature, constant headaches, pimples on my face, whitish discharge, painful nipples, heavy breasts and other pregnancy symptoms.  But pregnancy tests (blood) gave a negative result. Am so scared because my period has never stayed this long. I have never been on contraceptive so i do not think of any except pregnancy.  Please I need help especially as my left lower abdomen feels heavy as if there is a baby growing there. But I started bleeding 14/08 till now, so could be the problem?

ANSWER: Hello, Lady,

Headaches, fever, whitish discharge, and possibly painful nipples could be signs of infection. Whitish discharge can also indicate you are not currently fertile. The fact you feel heavy in the left lower abdomen suggests the possibility you have a tubal pregnancy, but you should test positive for pregnancy if that is the case. It could also mean there is an infection there. According to what you have said, you have been bleeding for a little over a day.

I think you would be wise to go see the doctor, and ask him the reasons for your problems. Nobody will be able to diagnose them over the internet. You need to be examined and tested. Surgical abortions can lead to all sorts of infections. Some abortionists do not sterilize their instruments, so a woman can get an infection from a previous client. Some infections are relatively quiet and don't have symptoms for quite awhile. They can lead to medical problems later, and can also cause a woman to become sterile, so she is unable to have children. Surgical abortion can also harm a woman's future children.

Please go see a doctor, and let me know what you find out. Please don't ever have an abortion again. Abortion is dangerous no matter how it is done. Please stay safe!

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your findings.  I saw a gynecologist and he asked for a pelvic scan to be done.  The scan result shows an echo-free (40X40mm) above the fundus of uterus (uterine fundal cyst). Could that be the cause of the amenorrhea? Although other tests were also carried out but the results are not out yet.  Thanks so much for your timely response, i really do appreciate.

Answer
Hello, Lady,

You're welcome.

As for whether your cyst is the cause of your amenorrhea, really, you should ask your doctor about that. It can be a possibility, but giving you statistics would be rather pointless. I don't have access to your scan or anything. Your doctor does. It's a good question to ask. Please let me know what you find out.

It reinforces my urging you not to have any more abortions. A surgical abortion damages the surface of the uterus, and could cause all kinds of problems. Take care.
