Massage Therapy Contraindications for Adhesive Capsulitis: A Professional Guide

Question
what would contraindicate massage treatment for a client with adhesive capsulitis

Answer
Thank you for your question, Julie.

IMHO and considering I am NOT a medical doctor, I can only offer you a passage from a book that I rely on completely for contraindications of conditions, "A Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology", pg 134, by Ruth Werner:

"Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)
This disorder involves the synovial joint capsule at the glenohumeral joint. Often precipitated by some other inflammatory problem (busitis or tendinitis), the joint capsule gradually adheres to the articulating bones, causing pain, inflammation, and loss of range of motion. The onset is usually gradual. It will often spontaneously resolve without intervention, although it may leave a permanent loss of range of motion at the joint. Physical therapy is often recommended for persons with frozen shoulder to minimize and reverse the adhesive process; massage can fit into this context as well."

In conclusion, I would highly recommend you also put your question to a Physical Therapist.

Hope that helps you.
