Cerebral Palsy Massage: Contraindications and Considerations for Massage Therapists

Question
Hi. I am studying to become a massage therepist and I have to write a paper on contraindications and indications for massage(regarding a specific disorder). I chose cerebral palsy and I can barely find any info so can you explain some of the contraindications and why? Thank you.

Answer
Thanks for your inquiry, Amanda.

Normally I am not required to answer homework questions, but since yours is pretty easy, I will give it a shot.  You are correct that there is not alot of information available on the subject regarding contraindications and indications, but I will give you what I know.

Massage therpay can have a valuable role in improving the quality of life of a person with cerebral palsy (CP). If physical therapy is used to stretch and strengthen skeletal muscles, massage will be a safe, indicated choice. The only caution is that people with very severe CP may not be able to communicate their wants or concerns clearly. Massage is contraindicated if the client has areas without feeling, client MUST be able to communicate this. CP can be massaged, but often requires extra training in dealing with special-needs populations. If a massage therapist works with a client who cannot speak, other modes of communication, including nonverbal signs, becomes especially important. It is the responsibility of the massage therapist to make sure that his or her work is welcome and freely accepted at all time.

I hope that helps you for the paper.
