Finger Numbness: Causes, Relief & What to Do

Question
Hi,

I am feeling numbness in my little finger and half of the ring finger although there is no pain in my hand. What do you advise for relieving these symptoms?

Regards,
Rahul

Answer
Hello Rahul,

Numbness indicates that there is pressure on nerves.  The pressure might be in your hand, your lower or upper arm or even your ribs.  Tight muscles can cause pressure on nerves and so can bones. Most often, muscles are to blame.

Start seeking out tender areas in your lower arm.  The tendons of the fingers run almost up to your elbow so examine and explore the whole lower arm.  If you find tender areas as you examine and press on the muscles in your lower arm, pay attention to whether they refer into your area of numbness.  Do they cause it to be more or less?

Those tender areas could be the cause of the numbness.  If you relax the tight muscles that are causing tenderness to pressure, you will also get rid of the cause of the numbness.

Massage any tight, tender areas by rubbing, pinching or lifting the muscle.  Manipulate or massage the muscles to increase circulation and help them relax.

If the muscles in your ribs were involved, I would expect that you would also complain about the rib area.

I hope this helps you get rid of the numbness in your little finger and ring finger.

Thank you for writing,

Kathryn
