Can You Get Pregnant While on Your Period? Understanding the Risks

There is a chance of getting pregnant during period. Pregnancy happens when a female releases a fertile egg from her ovaries which then merges with a male sperm during sexual intercourse. Fertilization takes place and a fetus begins to form in the womb.

For pregnancy to occur, the woman must be ovulating at the time meaning she is fertile. The menstrual cycle determines the period of ovulation. Menstruation is when the uterine wall is shed off if fertilization does not take place. This is shed off to make the uterus ready for the next ovulation. Menstruation gets out in form of blood through the vagina.

Ovulation occurs on approximately the 14th day from the start of the period. This usually is for women who have a 28 days cycle. The number of days from the start of periods to the day before the next period begins is the length of the menstrual cycle.

The time of ovulating may however vary. It can come between the tenth day to the nineteenth day after the beginning of period. Some women have a menstrual cycle of twenty one days while others have thirty five days or even more. It is difficult to calculate accurately the monthly cycle of such women some times.

There is a possibility of conceiving during periods. The days before ovulation are counted using a monthly cycle of 28 days. It is assumed that ovulation will occur after a fortnight. However, this happens in less than 70% of the women. Even those with such regular cycles still experience changes occasionally.

Women having a cycle of 21 or 35 days may ovulate earlier or later than they expect. Therefore, no method is 100% in calculating the actual date of ovulation. A woman may therefore assume she is on her safe days while she isn't.

Furthermore, the fertile period lasts for approximately a week each month. Sperms can survive for about a week after sex and the egg can survive for twenty four hours or even more. This means that one can get pregnant as sperms could still be surviving by the time the ovum is released

Periods usually last between three to seven days. There are women who bleed for a longer time and this may eat into their infertile days. If such a woman has sex during menstruation, there are chances of her becoming pregnant.

Chance of getting pregnant during period is usually there for a woman who does not have protected sex. No woman can be 100% accurate about her unsafe or safe days. This is because her fertile days do vary from time to time. Are you trying to conceive and looking for a pregnancy miracle ? There are ways you can become pregnant.
