DIY Glycerin Soap: A Simple Guide to Homemade Beauty

How many times did you wish your soap was as gentle as the ones they use in spa treatments? And how many times did you think you will have to shell more money to get a glycerin soap, in order to pamper your skin and make yourself extra-glamorous? We all want to look good, but sometimes we get caught in the idea that looking beautiful is an expensive job.

But guess what? It is not. Because now you can make your own glycerin soap right from the comfort of your home! Want to know how? Then read on!

How To Make Glycerin Soap – 7 Simple Steps:

1. Get The Materials:

First, you will need to stock up on your supplies.

  • You can buy glycerin, which is the soap base in the block form which can be melted when heated. This can be the clear or coloured kind.
  • In addition, you will need essential natural oils to enhance your soap. Buy a small bottle as a few drops are needed. Choose from lavender, lemon, primrose, and peppermint – any fragrance you would like to put in your soap.
  • Next, you will need moulds. You could also use an ice tray, but for more fun and attractive looking bars choose some interesting moulds. Ensure that the mould is for the soap and that after solidification the soap easily pops out.
  • Finally, rubbing alcohol can be found in your medicine drawer or at a chemist store. Use it in a spray bottle. It helps remove bubbles from the glycerin before it hardens.

2. Melt Glycerin In A Double Boiler:

To begin the process, the glycerin has to be melted in a double boiler. Use as much glycerin as you need to fill your moulds. Small pieces will melt easily. Put the pieces in a double boiler filled with water over medium heat. Melt the glycerin completely. You can also liquefy the glycerin in a microwave.

3. Add Essential Oils For Fragrance:

Once the glycerin has melted, stir in the natural essential oil of your choice. Be careful to use a few drops as it is concentrated. A wooden spatula can be used to mix thoroughly. Now remove from the stove top or microwave.

4. Get The Moulds Ready:

Now, prepare the moulds. Lay them out over paper towels and spray rubbing alcohol on the surface that will come into contact with the glycerin mixture. This prevents bubbles from being formed as the soap cools and hardens.

5. Making The Soap:

Pour the soap mix cautiously into the moulds. Fill till its rim. Do not spill. If you like, you can also use a funnel to pour the liquefied glycerin mix into the mould. If the mixture dries up, then reheat using the boiler or microwave and then pour again.

6. Color Can Be Fun:

Soap can be imparted with various colours by mixing cosmetic grade colorants. After you melt the glycerin and add the fragrance, you can add a few drops of color and then pour into the moulds.

7. Make Them Special:

Craft materials such as dried flowers, tiny toys, animal plastic toys, coins etc., can be added to decorate the soap. They make for great theme gifts and giveaways. Baby shower soaps can be made by inserting plastic rattles that are child safe into the glycerin before pouring them into moulds.

The Rope Soap:

  1. Melt the glycerin and pour it in a large metal or plastic container. Add your natural essential oils for fragrance.
  2. Now dip a length of a good quality cotton rope into the mixture and let it harden on the rope. Repeat this procedure several times till you get the thickness you are looking for.
  3. You can also knot or twist the rope to create different shapes.
  4. You can hang it on your shower caddy for easy access while bathing.
