Why Oatmeal?

Oatmeal is a good moisturizer, and has emollient properties. It has been used as a cure for treating many skin diseases and is especially effective in healing atopic dermatitis (1). Almond is the other ingredient which features in both soap recipes. Almond oil contains many essential nutrients which are extremely good for the skin. It helps retain moisture as well.

Oat Soap Recipes:

You can make this soap in different ways. The chemical process which most herbal soap manufacturers use involves the use of lye, a chemical that is quite volatile. Don’t worry though; the recipes listed here use an alternative base of glycerin soap. Glycerin soap base is available online. So, without any further ado, check out the two oat soap recipes:

1. Homemade Oatmeal Soap (With A Glycerin Base):

This recipe makes around 7 bars of soap.

Ingredients/Equipment:

  • 1 cup organic oats (rolled)
  • 2 tbsp almond oil
  • 2 tbsp honey (unprocessed)
  • 2 lbs glycerin soap base (shea butter preferably)
  • Soap Mold or Soap Pan

Directions:

  1. Begin melting your glycerin soap base.
  2. You can either microwave the soap base in a bowl, or heat it in a pot over the stove.
  3. You can consider blending the oats before you add them to the soap, as it will give you a finer consistency.
  4. Mix the oats, honey and almond oil.
  5. Stir well.
  6. Once the mixture becomes smooth, carefully pour the mixture into your soap mold or pan.
  7. Let it stand for about 4-5 hours until it hardens.
  8. You can refrigerate the soap mold to help the soap harden quicker.
  9. Once the soap cools down and hardens, take it out of the soap mold.
  10. Using a soap cutter or a sharp knife cut the soap into bars.

You can choose any shape that you fancy. We recommend simple shapes like rectangles or squares, as irregular shapes like circles are difficult to make.

Your soap, or rather the soap bar is now ready to use. This glycerin based soap is ideal for treating dry skin and you should generally use this soap in the winters. Once you get better at making these soaps, you could consider wrapping them up in a shiny paper and gifting them to your friends.

2. Homemade Oatmeal Almond Soap (Goat Milk Based):

This recipe makes around 4 bars of soap.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz. oats (powdered)
  • 2 oz. almonds (roasted)
  • 1 pound goat milk glycerol soap
  • 1½ tsp almond oil

Directions:

  1. Pour the oatmeal in a food processor and grind it until it becomes a rough powder.
  2. The process should take around 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Once the powder is ready, add the almonds and grind until the almonds and oatmeal become fine powder. This should take around 5-10 minutes. Don’t take longer as the almond might turn into almond butter.
  4. Begin melting the Goat Milk Soap in a pot, stirring it continually.
  5. Once the soap melts, pour it into another vessel.
  6. Add the almond oil and ground almond-oatmeal powder to the soap.
  7. Stir well and make sure everything is evenly distributed.
  8. Pour the soap into a pan or a soap mold.
  9. Let the soap stand and harden for around 2 hours.
  10. Once the soap cools and sets, open the mold and remove the soap from the mold.
  11. Using a soap cutter or a sharp knife, cut the soap into bars.

You can choose what shape you fancy. We recommend simple shapes like rectangles or squares, as irregular shapes like circles are difficult to make.

Your soap, or rather the soap bar is now ready to use. The Goat Milk based soap has many health benefits.
