Ingredients:
- Castor oil, 4 oz
- Avocado oil, 5 oz
- Rice bran oil, 5 oz
- Shea butter, 5 oz
- Sweet Almond oil, 5 oz
- Soy Milk Lye, 9 oz
- Soy Milk, 18 oz
- Olive oil, 20 oz
- Coconut oil, 20 oz
Directions:
The preparation of the recipe is divided into two distinct sections.
Making Soy Milk Lye:
- First, we create the lye solution.
- You can freeze the homemade soy milk in freezer bags and set them aside.
- Keep the frozen milk on a table and chop it into pieces.
- Add a little amount of soy milk (around 1 oz), so that the lye begins dissolving.
- Add some ice cubes and cold water to a bowl and keep the lye container on top of the ice.
- Make sure that the bowl is big enough to accommodate the lye container.
- While stirring, add around ¼ more of the lye solution until it mixes well.
- Keep on adding more lye to the soy milk in stages.
- Remember to use a wooden spoon for mixing the lye.
- As the soy milk pieces begin to melt, continue adding more lye, while remembering to stir continuously.
- If you stop stirring, the lye will clump up, and these clumps will be visible in the soap as well.
- Continue adding lye until you are done with it.
- If the mixture turns yellow, don’t panic. This is perfectly normal.
- Once this happens, keep the lye solution aside.
- Partially submerge the vessel in cold water.
Preparing The Oils:
- Once the lye has been prepared and set aside in cold water, let it stand for a while and move onto mixing the oils.
- Melt the coconut oil and shea butter (hard oils) first.
- Add the olive, castor, sweet almond and avocado oils (liquid oils) now.
- Adding these liquid oils helps cool down the melted oils fast.
- Once these oils have cooled down, they are ready to be used in the soap making process.
- Add your own special fragrance, (essential oils like orange blossom or eucalyptus and lavender oil) to make the melted mixture smell divine.
- Give the lye solution a stir.
- You will normally find some globs, which are milk fats that have created bubbles from the air pockets.
- Whisk the lye solution well so that it takes on a smooth consistency.
- Always use wooden vessels; in this case you can use a wooden spoon to whisk the lye solution.
- Finally, add the lye to the oils and mix well.
- Once the mixture sets, pour it into a soap mold or a flat pan.
- You can customize your soap bar’s shape at this stage.
- Remember to use heat-safe soap molds.
- Once you have filled the molds up, let the mixture set overnight.
- You can even freeze it to speed up the hardening process.
- Pop the soap out of the mold the next day.
- Use a soap cutter or a sharp knife and cut the soap into your desired shape.
- Let the soap cure for around a month, as it tends to take a long time to cure.
- Once the soap is cured, enjoy having a bath in the homemade soy milk soap.
