Watermelon Tea Recipe: 6 Easy Steps for a Refreshing Summer Drink

Summers would be horrible without watermelons, wouldn’t they? I just love that juicy fruit which refreshes as it delights! Just a slice of this fruit is enough to give all the respite one needs from the heat, right? And I guess you too would be feeling the same!

But did you ever think of the different ways you can consume a watermelon? What if I now say that you can actually make tea using watermelon? You would love to know how, wouldn’t you?

This super-healthy beverage would probably be your best friend in summers! So why wait? Relax and read on!

Ingredients Required To Make Watermelon Tea

  • 2 tea bags
  • Water
  • 5 to 6 slices of watermelon
  • Lemon
  • Sugar
  • Ice

How To Make Watermelon Tea:

  1. Boil 2 ½ cups of water and add the tea bags once the water is boiled.
  2. While the tea is brewing, add sugar and ice cubes to cool it down.
  3. Let the tea cool down and in the meantime, puree the watermelons using a food processor.
  4. Mix the tea and the puree together, but before you do this make sure that the tea is at room temperature.
  5. For every two cups of tea you need 1/4th cup of watermelon puree.
  6. Squeeze in some lemon and add some more ice.
  7. And there you go! A refreshing cup of watermelon tea coupled with lemon is waiting or you!

Another Variation Of Watermelon Tea:

Another simple variation of this recipe is to add mint or basil flavour to this tea.

  1. All you need to do is in place of sugar, add sugar syrup infused with mint or basil leaves to the tea.
  2. To make the sugar syrup, mix water and sugar in a saucepan and stir it until the sugar dissolves over medium heat.
  3. One the sugar has dissolved, boil the mixture for a few minutes and then remove it from the heat.
  4. Add the mint/basil leaves, cover the saucepan and let the leaves sit on the syrup until it cools down.
  5. After the syrup has cooled down, pour into an airtight jar and refrigerate.

If you are a ginger fan, you can add that too in your iced tea. Grate a little bit of ginger and squeeze the grated ginger to extract its juice. Add the same to the tea. And well, you will have a new dimension to the taste of this summer cooler!

Another wonderful thing about this tea is that you can even alter the flavour using different types of tea.

  1. If you want a healthy version, then use green tea. Otherwise, you can use normal black tea.
  2. You can also use tea of various flavours to complement the taste of the watermelon.
  3. Some flavours that work well with watermelon are pomegranate, rose, and citrus flavours like orange and lemon.

Word Of Caution:

While making the tea, let it cool down to room temperature before you add the watermelon. Also wait till the tea has cooled down to make the watermelon puree. Do not store the tea for too long as lemon has a tendency to react with watermelon and you could end up with an upset stomach.

This tea is the perfect alternative to the fizzy drinks we rely on during summers. Also, it’s a good option for people who are diabetic or prefer naturally-sweet drinks as one can completely skip the sugar. The sweetness of the watermelon will be similar to that of the sugar syrup.

So why the delay? Just rush to your nearest fruit market and grab a couple of watermelons!
