QuestionHi. I want to mill a cavity into a piece of aluminum plate, and use this as a mold for casting silver. I plan to melt .900 coin silver. Will molten silver adhere to the aluminum mold? Or should I mill my cavity into a piece of steel? Thanks. Chris.
AnswerGreetings,
I would not be using Aluminium as it melts at around 400C, whereas the silver will be around 900C when molten.
Yes use steel, which will will disperse the heat quicker and chill the cast.........aluminium would also stay hot for too long.
Make sure to make the mould as a two piece so that you can remove the silver after it is cast.
I have answered question previously about melting, casting etc, so I suggest you read over them.
God Luck and Cheers, P
