Gold Recasting for Rings: Is It a Good Idea? | Toronto & Hamilton Jeweler

Question
I wish to use the diamond from my fathers ring and have a new setting designed, using the gold from his ring and other pieces of jewellery I have.A jewellery store I talked to said that to recast gold for a ring was not reccommended. It would be prone to breakage(brittleness I guess). Is this your experience? Do you know reputable people in Toronto,Hamilton Ontaro area? Thanks for any advice you can give.

Answer
Hi Brenda,
It is not that bad at all, I will like to know the design you have and the amount of gold you have for such project. Make sure you deal with a reputable but not expensive jeweler, if you have all the metal you should not pay more than $300 for everything, if you have more metal than needed you should get credit towards the charges. It is very important for me to know the designs and amount of gold to give you a better advice. I am in Detroit area and do know someone in Torornto.
Please send me pics to locorla@yahoo.com or masterjeweleroc@aol.com.

Hope it helps,
