Restoring Yellow Gold to White Gold Jewelry: A Guide

Question
I bought my ring in october of 2006. The ring is beautiful but it was white gold. I prefer the traditional yellow gold. The jeweler said it was no problem he could dip the ring into a solution and turn it yellow again. He dipped it and of course it turned yellow. Now.. 9 months later, the yellow is faded and it looks like a cross between yellow and white gold. Is there some kind of solution I can dip my ring into to turn it yellow gold again. I've tried gold cleaners but it doesn't seem to make the gold yellow again...

Answer
Thanks for your question Brittany.  What the jeweler did is called "electroplating".  He put a very thin layer of yellow gold on top of your white gold ring.  Of course, because it is so thin it is not durable.  Unfortunately you need special equipment to do this so you can't do it at home.  Plus, you will need to do it every year or so to keep that finish.

You might consider moving the stones to a yellow-gold ring.    Sorry for your trouble!  Good luck to you.
