DIY Gold Casting & Polishing: A Beginner's Guide

Question
hello,

i think maybe this question may have been more in the filed of the expert named Thomas but his 'ask a question" link says "maxed out".  however maybe you can help.

i'm having small pendants cast in gold.  i'll be selling them when finished.  i don't have the space to keep polishing equipment in my apartment and want to try to polish the cast pieces myself instead of sending them out (also don't want acid in the home).

is the coating that covers a cast gold piece when my caster gives it to me just a very thin layer from the heating process?  i have tried removing it with high grit sandpaper (600 grit) and that seems to remove the coating and then i can get a matte finish by rubbing the piece with fine steel wool.

my question: post casting, when i remove the thin coating layer with high grit sand paper and the piece is visually satisfactory to me is there still something left on the piece (regarding post casting coating) that i don't know about that will show up after time?

thank you

Answer
there may be some firescale left on the piece in the creases
or crevices that may be on the piece.however if fit is acceptable to your eye by all means utilise your product,
the firescale will not reappear as you have remved it by using yoiur emery paper and steelwool.
