hi
my questions are will slivertone turn you green, how do you take care of it, and how long does it last?

Hi, Kalesha. Thanks for the question.
If what you mean by "silvertone" is costume jewelry with a silver color, the most basic answer is that it will last untill the plated surface wears away. How long will that take? If you wear it everyday, the life will be much shorter than if worn less often. Because of different conditions in how and where people wear jewelry, the lifespan of a costume piece all depends on the wearer and the thickness and quality of the finish in the first place. So, you see, I can not give an actual life time for such items. Just keep in mind, when the wear is apparent, it is time to simply discard the item or quit wearing it. There is little to nothing to do to make it wearable once worn though.
Green stains on metal and skin generally come from metals reacting to body oils, perspiration and environment things like salt air near the ocean or chemicals in swimming pools or even encountered at work. Generally, as long as the outside plating is complete, the tarnish will not show. Once the surface is broken, then depending on the metal the item is really made of you might get a green stain and mess or blackish color of tarnish. Copper based metals often will show the green discoloration. Some other metals used in costume jewelry will show a black stain. Some will simply wear and look a grayish color with few stains on the skin but the item will be dull and unappealing.
I wish there was a better answer. The term "silvertone" can apply to many qualities of costume jewelry. For that reason, a definite answer cannot be had.
I do suggest that plated item worn as earrings with posts not be purchased, unless the posts are hypoallergenic. This means generally you will need stainless steel posts. Any plated post is certain to show a discoloration or even green around the ear hole and on the earring.

AnswerOops! I failed to put care into the answer. Generally, a gentle cleanng with a mild dish detergent, rinse well and pat dry will work to remove salts and other stuff that will lead to tarnish. A good jewelry cloth with no polishes or chemicals will also help. Thanks again. Thomas.
