Removing Black Deposits from Opal Earrings: A Gentle Guide

Question
HELP I have a beautiful pair of 14k with beautiful bluish green firey opals. problem is on one of the earrings in the crevices there is black. I think this is from past oiling of the stones. how do I get this out without subjecting the opals to something harsh? thanks, April

Answer
Dear April, If you mean the crevices between the stone and the setting , then some warm soapy water & a tooth brush , then dry  with and a soft cloth .If there is a crevice in the stone itself , then it is probably a result of the oil. You can try  some alcohol to disolve the oil or even tea tree oil  that is a solvent  for grease and oils, neither will hurt the stone. If you can get to it with a cloth try tea tree oil with a soft fine tooth brush . best  regards  Rod Keady
