Gold Filled Jewelry & Humidity: Care & Storage for Your Necklaces

Question
I am creating necklaces for an art show in September. My workstation is in my basement where it is slightly humid and cool. Is this bad for gold filled jewelry? Please let me know the best way to store and care for this.
Thanks!

Answer
Dear Sara,

Unless you are storing your jewelry for quite a long time, you should have no worries. "Gold filled" denotes a heavy layer of gold over a base metal. As such it should react to humidity (cold is not a problem) no differently than a "solid gold" piece. Pure gold is inert - it does not oxidize. Most gold-filled jewelry is 12 karat - or 50% gold (12/24ths).

Best of luck,
