Questionis there anywhere i can go to see exactly what the mark looks like just to make sure it is that of what i think it may be. as for instance, inside a ring there is 14k also there is another mark if you look at it one way it looks like the initials pd then it may be an fd or it could be a fancy ro. then if you look closely it looks like a hang man with just the head circled in. please help i don't want to misrepresent what this is to someone.
AnswerMaria, unfortunately finding a manufacturer's trademark is very, very difficult. I along with most of the other on the Jewelry, Gems and Minerals site of allexperts.com do not research trademarks for that very reason.
There are government trademark searches but this is quite tedious and generally will not give you what you want to find. There are just too many categories and such to search from to specialize the search.
One trick for "seeing" a mark which is difficult to read is often used by silver flatware and tableware specialists. You wipe off the surface of the item where the mark is, then take a candle and let it soot up the area. Then, very gently a transparent tape is placed on the mark and rubbed down well. Remove the tape gently and you have an impression of the mark. Then place the tape straight and flat down on a piece of white paper. The mark shows up as white against the soot background.
Perhaps this will help.
