Gold Plating Repair & Jewelry Replating: Restore Your Rings
QuestionI have several rings that were gold plated and after wearing them a long time, the plating has come off. I love these rings and was wondering if I can get them dipped in gold or some other process to restore them? Is this a costly process? How long would you expect the gold to last? Where would I get such a process done?
AnswerHI BARBARA,
IT IS VERY EASY TO REPLATE JEWELRY. MOST JEWELRY STORES CAN DO A REPLATE. THE RINGS MUST BE IN GOOD ENEOUGH CONDITION TO TAKE THE HEAT IN THE PLAIING SOLUTION. IT IS AN ELECTROLOSIS PROCESS AND THE PLATING IS THICKER THE LONGER IT STAYS IN THE SOLUTION. AND THE THICKER IT IS THE LONGER IT LASTS. A TOP QHALITY GOLDPLATED WATCH HAS 6 MILS OF PLATING AND WILL LAST A LIFETIME. USUALLY 3 MILS IS GOOD FOR A RING AND SHOULD LAST A GOOD LONG TIME. THIS PROCESS IS NOT REAL EXPENSIVE BUT AS GOLD IS APPROACHING $1000 AN OUNCE IT MAY BE A LITTLE MORE THAN BEFORE.
GOOD LUCK
PETER
